Chhath is an ancient Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Surya (Sun) and his wives Usha and Sandhya. It is specifically celebrated in the Indian states of Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and the Madhesh region of Nepal. Chhath is also called by many other names like Chhati, Chhat Parv, Data Chhat, Dala Puja, and Surya Sasthi, etc. Chhath Puja does not involve idol worshipping, it is like thanksgiving to Lord Surya for nourishing the life on Earth. The term ‘Chhath’ means sixth in Bhojpuri, Maithili, and Hindi. The festival is commemorated on the sixth day of the month of Kartika in the Vikram Samvat. This year, Chhath will be observed on 13th November.
The rituals of Chhath Puja are observed over a period of four days that include holy bathing, fasting, self-abstinence, standing in water for a long period and offering prayers to the rising and setting sun. The devotees observe fast without drinking water for three days in a row. The rigorous fast is broken on the fourth day by taking ginger with sugar after worshipping the morning Sun. The devotees who fast on Chhath are known to be blessed with a long, happy, and prosperous life. There are many stories about the origin of the Chhath festival in India. One of them is that Queen Draupadi, the wife of Pandavas observed a fast for the blessing of Lord Surya that not only solved her immediate problems but also helped the Pandavas later regain their lost kingdom.
